A game set in a surreal vision of the developing frontier

WolfEye Studios is the name of the company founded by former directors of Arkane Studios, makers for Dishonored and Prey. Now that we've cleared that out, let's talk a bit about their newly revealed project called Weird West, an action RPG set in a “surreal vision of the developing frontier.”

Unlike the previous games they have been working on in the past, Weird West isn't a triple A title. According to Raphael Colantonio, President and Creative Director at WolfEye, “the AAA market is risk-averse and innovation suffers from it. As a Game Designer, I’ve been wanting to try new ideas and approaches and I believe the Independent games are in the best space to do so.”

Weird West is set in a dark fantasy version of the Wild West where lawmen and gunslingers share the world with fantastical creatures. Players will be taken through the origin stories of a group of non-conformist heroes, as they are challenged through every decision in an unforgiving land.

The folks at WolfEye claim each playthrough is unique and specifically designed for the actions taken, which means that the world will react to the choices you make. Gameplay-wise, Weird West seems more akin to top-down shooters, although there are many action-RPG elements shown in the screenshots as well.

There's also a stylish reveal trailer available for your viewing pleasure, but beyond that, not much else is known about Weird West. In fact, we do know that it will come to PC via Steam and that you can already wishlist if you want.

We kind of expect the game to be released in 2020, but we won't know for sure until WolfEye confirms the information. In any case, West Weird feels like a unique game that can't be compared with anything that we've seen until now. We would have loved to see a bit more gameplay though.
