Flickr's new feature goes one step beyond keywords

Flickr has introduced a new feature that should make it easier for users to search through the trove of photographs by using a technology that seeks for visually similar photos.

The company announced the update by saying that searching based on tags and descriptions only gets you far. Similarity search, however, will get you even better results.

Xanthe Travlos, head of Flickr, says the new feature uses advanced technology which allows users to surface similar photos. "Here's how it works: after your initial search, whether you're looking for your favorite succulent or the perfect image of a '67 Mustang (not the horse), just click the "..." in the upper right of the photo you're excited about. We'll surface similar images for you," Travlos states.

This feature is, of course, perfect when you're looking for cat pictures. All you'll have to do is run the keyword "cat," pick one you like best and tap the three-button menu to get similar pictures displayed in a few seconds.

Yahoo's last hope

Frankly, this is a great feature that should help Flickr users spend less time trying to find the right keywords to get the results they want.

At this point, given the situation Yahoo is in, Flickr seems to be in a bit of a rush to get some kind of new feature out to keep users around. If you didn't know, if you choose to delete your Yahoo account, you'll also lose all the pictures uploaded to the attached Flickr account. Since this seems to be the only reason many people have yet to tap the "delete" button after the massive data breaches and the disastrous communication, Flickr may yet have some life in it.

Plus, there's also the fact that Flickr offers users 1TB or free space to use, which is definitely something that many users are looking for when trying to find the right place to stash their photos in the cloud.
