Mozilla to launch its paid VPN service later this year

Mozilla has recently announced that its paid VPN service, which has until now been referred to as the Firefox Private Network VPN, would officially launch as Mozilla VPN in just a few weeks.

The service, which is currently available as a beta, will thus land as a stable product, and Mozilla says that at first Mozilla VPN would be offered to users on Windows, Android, and iOS at $4.99 per month.

Mozilla VPN will be exclusive to users in the United States at first and will then go live in other markets too, albeit Mozilla hasn’t shared any specifics in this regard.

The company explains that the feedback sent by testers play a key role in the development of Mozilla VPN, as no less than 70 percent of those who tried out the service told the development team that it “helps them feel empowered, safe, and independent while being online.”

More than 8 in 10 testers said Mozilla VPN is easy to use.

“Your feedback also helped us identify ways to make the VPN more impactful and privacy-centric, which includes building features like split tunneling and making it available on Mac clients. The VPN will exit Beta phase in the next few weeks, move out of the Firefox Private Network brand, and become a stand-alone product, Mozilla VPN, to serve a larger audience,” Mozilla says.

The Firefox Private Network VPN officially entered beta in the fall of the year as a browser extension, and it’s part of Mozilla’s efforts to monetize more services.

The company earlier this year decided to lay off tens of employees, claiming that its strategy of finding more sources of income didn’t work as expected. Mozilla said it planned to “work within the limits of our core finances,” explaining that it wants to spend some $43 million in 2020 for the launch of new products.
