With the release of Firefox 71 to the stable channel, Mozilla already kicked off the development of the next major release of its open-source and cross-platform web browser, Firefox 72.

Firefox 72 is now available for public beta testing, which means that we can have an early look at its features and improvements. One of these will certainly please Linux and macOS users as Picture-in-Picture (PiP) support is finally coming to their platforms.

Picture-in-Picture support has just been added for Windows users in the Firefox 71 release announced earlier today, but with Firefox 72 it also comes to Linux and macOS users, allowing them to detach a video from its web page and watch it in a floating window while working in other tabs.

More Enhanced Tracking Protection improvements, other changes

Besides PiP support on Linux and macOS, which is a big feature, Firefox 72 also promises more improvements to the Enhanced Tracking Protection feature on all supported platforms by enabling automatic blocking of known fingerprinters when running in Standard mode.

With Firefox 72, the web browser will display prompts for notification permissions only for websites that the user has interacted with and will remove support for blocking images from individual domains, offering users alternatives through third-party extensions.

"Support for blocking images from individual domains has been removed from Firefox, because of low usage and poor user experience. Content Blocker extensions like uMatrix are a much better alternative for addressing this use case," said Mozilla.

If you want to experience these new features and enhancements, you can download the beta version of Firefox 72 for GNU/Linux, macOS, and Windows right now through our free software portal, but keep in mind not to use it for any production work as it's an early development release.
