A new version of the browser went live today

Mozilla has just released a new major update for Firefox, bringing the browser to version 108.

This time, however, the Firefox update doesn’t bring too many big changes, though it’s still a worthy release that users should install as soon as possible.

For example, Mozilla says that on Windows 11, the browser now forces the processes for background tabs to use the efficiency mode. This means the application now eats up fewer resources, making the browser overall lighter on system performance.

At the same time, Mozilla has also included improvements for import maps and the Process Manager. Here are the biggest changes in Firefox 108, as published by Mozilla:

  • Import maps, which allow web pages to control the behavior of JavaScript imports, are now enabled by default.
  • Processes used for background tabs now use efficiency mode on Windows 11 to limit resource use.
  • The shift+esc keyboard shortcut now opens the Process Manager, offering a way to quickly identify processes that are using too many resources.
  • Improved frame scheduling when under load; this substantially improves Firefox’s MotionMark scores.

Few bug fixes as well

When it comes to fixes, Firefox 108 comes with the typical security patches, but also with three notable improvements.

For example, Mozilla says it has managed to improve the PDF experience by adding support for non-English characters when saving and printing PDF forms. There are also improvements for the bookmark toolbar.

“The bookmarks toolbar's default "Only show on New Tab" state works correctly for blank new tabs. As before, you can change the bookmark toolbar's behavior using the toolbar context menu,” Mozilla says.

The new version of Firefox is live right now on the supported desktop platforms, and of course, users should download and install it as soon as possible on their devices.
