Early version of the dark theme currently being tested

Dark themes are becoming more of a priority for Microsoft, and most recently, the company started working on such a visual update for another Office app.

AL discovered that the software giant is experimenting with a dark theme for OneNote for Windows 10, though for the time being this facelift isn’t available for users.

As you can see in the screenshot here, the dark theme covers most of the OneNote user interface, but at the same time leaves the work area white.

I believe this is just an early implementation of the dark theme, however, so Microsoft will probably make this part of the UI dark as well before it releases it to users.

This is actually an approach that the company used for the Mail app in Windows 10 as well, though it remains to be seen if the white panel will be part of the first OneNote dark theme version available for insiders.

Only for the Windows 10 version of OneNote

By the looks of things, theme settings will be tied to the Microsoft account, which means that if you’re using OneNote for Windows 10, the same visual style should be enabled when you are moving from one device to another.

Needless to say, the dark theme will be part only of the Windows 10 version of OneNote, at least at first, though Microsoft could release it for the desktop version too. However, given Microsoft’s increased focus on the Windows 10 version, it’s unlikely to ever make it to the Win32 app.

In fact, the software giant has recently made OneNote for Windows 10 the new default in the Office productivity suite, and while the desktop sibling remains available, it’s not the one that Microsoft recommends to users.

At this point, there’s no ETA as to when the dark theme will be released to insiders, but I guess it should happen soon given an experimental implementation is already available.
