Apple recently demoed the upcoming Final Cut Pro X 10.4 update of the powerful, next-generation video editor for its macOS operating system during the Final Cut Pro X Creative Summit event.

The third edition of FCPX (Final Cut Pro X) Creative Summit took place this weekend, from October 27 to October 29, in Cupertino, CA, USA, and it welcomed all professional video editors who wanted to find out what Apple has in store for the next major Final Cut Pro X release, as reported by fcp.co's Peter Wiggins.

And it looks like Final Cut Pro X 10.4 brings lots of goodies to the table, starting with support for the new HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) video compression standard, also known as H.265 and MPEG-H Part 2 that Apple implemented in the latest iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra 10.13 operating systems.

8K timeline support, HDR and VR support, and much more

The Final Cut Pro X 10.4 update coming later this year also promises to let video editors work with new virtual reality tools to create immersive VR content, which is now fully supported in macOS High Sierra with a proper VR headset. VR support is implemented via Apple’s motion graphics software Motion 5.

HDR support is another great new feature that Apple added to Final Cut Pro X 10.4, allowing users to encode videos and convert them to the Rec. 2020 colorspace container, supporting both 4K and 8K formats. The update will also introduce new white balance picker wheels and curves color controls, and 360-degree video tools.

Last but not least, there will support for extra camera LUTs (Look Up Table), along with the ability to load custom LUTs per clip in the Inspector or add them as effects, support for importing iOS iMovie projects, better color correction functions, role-based forward and back clip selection, and support for an upcoming iMac Pro.
