FIFA 16, the new football simulation title from EA Sports, has managed to take the number one position in the United Kingdom video game chart during its debut week, showing that the genre is as popular as ever among players in the home country of the sport.

UKIE says that overall sales have decreased by around seven percent when compared to the same period of last year, but the organization is unable to track all sales that are delivered via digital distribution, which is playing an ever increasing role in the video game industry.

FIFA 16 will probably follow the trajectory of its predecessors, staying in the top ten for months at a time, with spikes in popularity in time for Christmas and after the end of the winter transfer window.

For the week that ended on September 26, The Taken King expansion for Destiny has been driven down to second place after spending just one week at number one.

Gamers who pick it up will be able to experience the new King's Fall raid, a range of extra strikes, as well as end-game activities linked to the Crucible.

Forza Motorsport 6, the racing title that's only offered on the Xbox One, is on the final position of the podium, also down one place when compared to the previous week.

The best of the rest

The Superchargers expansion for Skylanders, which focuses on vehicles and delivers more content for fans of the series, has managed to launch in fourth place, despite the ever increasing competition in the video game and toys genre.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, the open world experience from Hideo Kojima and Konami, is now in fifth place and is followed by another title from the same company, Pro Evolution Soccer 2016, which delivers some very solid core football mechanics.

Mad Max from Warner Bros. Interactive is in seventh, down two places, and is followed by Grand Theft Auto V from Rockstar, which is getting a range of new content for the Online mode from Rockstar.

Call of Duty: Ghosts, an older shooter from Activision, is in ninth place for the week.

The United Kingdom top ten is closed down by LEGO Jurassic World from Warner Bros., which at one point held the number one position.
