A solid battle line, good archery support, cavalry on the wings, and a good reserve. That’s what a cursory look at medieval history shows to be a good ideal for a general heading into battle. The many new engagements (both designed and generated) included in the new Swords and Scimitars for Field of Glory II: Medieval show how many variations on the theme exist and how exciting it is to find new ways to win an engagement.

The downloadable content was created by Byzantine Games and published by Slitherine. This is the second piece of DLC for the strategy title, with a focus on Eastern Europe and the Middle East from the X to the XII centuries.

The new campaigns feature the greatest hits of the period: two Komnenos Byzantine emperors, Saladin’s exploits, and The First Crusade. New historical epic battles, including Manzikert and Homs. Are fun to play, even if hard to win.

20 new nations are also featured in the generated battles, opening an incredible range of potential matchups. I am currently trying to defeat as many opposing armies lists as possible with the Lusignan Kingdom.

The core structure of Field of Glory II is not tweaked. This is a turn-based tactics-focused experience with impressive variety. Players need to pay attention to their units, their abilities, the way they position them on the field. Dice rolls play a role, creating chaos, asking gamers to react quickly, creating cool little narrative moments. Battles do take time, especially for the dedicated tactics fan who weights each move and attack very carefully.

Swords and Scimitars does not alter the presentation of the core game. But there are plenty of new nice-looking units to field and new places for players to wage warfare in. This is a good-looking strategy game that also offers all the data gamers need to test their tactical skills. The soundtrack is well-suited to the era and the tempo of the game.

Conclusion

Swords and Scimitars is another good piece of DLC for Field of Glory II: Medieval. Pick it up if you like what the title offers. If you have not engaged with this tactically solid experience, pick up the base game first. The new armies, although not unique, do offer interesting options and a lot of variety. The four new historically driven campaigns are also well-designed, within the limits of the game’s engine.

For fans of early Medieval warfare and turn-based tactical experiences, this title is quickly becoming a must-have. Its simulation is not perfect but there’s so much content offered that it is very easy to spend tens of hours just finding ways to beat everyone using your favorite nation and combination of units.
