The OS will no longer receive security updates

Starting today, the Fedora 24 Linux operating system officially reached end of life and it will no longer receive security or software updates. Users are now urged to upgrade to a supported release, such as Fedora 25 or the newly launched Fedora 26.

Fedora Project's Matthew Miller informed the community last week about the upcoming end of life support for Fedora 24 Linux, and today, August 8, 2017, is that day, when Fedora Project will stop feeding its software repositories with updates, which will make this release vulnerable to attacks.

"With the recent release of Fedora 26, Fedora 24 officially enters End Of Life (EOL) status on August 8th, 2017. After August 8th, all packages in the Fedora 24 repositories no longer receive security, bugfix, or enhancement updates. Furthermore, no new packages will be added to the Fedora 24 collection," said Miller.

Upgrade to Fedora 26 or Fedora 25

Fedora 26 was just released last month, and it's the most advanced version of the Red Hat sponsored operating system, supported with software and security updates for approximately 13 months, but Fedora 25 will still be supported for another four months or so, and upgrading to either release is OK.

Of course, it is recommended that you upgrade directly to Fedora 26, but Fedora Project provides upgrade instruction for both Fedora 25 and Fedora 26, so if you're still running Fedora 24 on your machines, please take your time and upgrade it so that you continue to receive the latest security patches and updated packages.

Released last year on June 21, Fedora 24 Linux shipped with the GNOME 3.20 desktop environment for the Workstation edition and it was powered by the Linux 4.5 kernel, which is no longer supported upstream for some time now. In 13 months, Fedora 24 repositories received over 10,500 updates.
