14 DAY TRIAL // Just the other day, a homeowner in the township of Hazlet in New Jersey happened to receive several mysterious packages in the mail.
Since the packages were addressed to somebody who did not live at that address, they contacted local authorities, who sent a crew to investigate the incident.
While inspecting the boxes to figure out who was in fact supposed to receive them, the police officers decided to open them to have a look inside.
Much to their surprise, they found that the packages all contained bags of marijuana. About 50 pounds (22.6 kilograms) of marijuana, to be more precise.
“On Tuesday 10/20/15 officers responded to a residence in town that had a delivery left that was not expected, and addressed to someone that did not live at the residence.”
“Officers opened the packages and found they contained approximately 50 pounds of marijuana,” the Hazlet Township Police Department write in a Facebook post detailing the occurrence.
Authorities are now looking for the weed's rightful owners
As expected, an investigation into this incident is now ongoing. Photos of the bags of marijuana were shared on social media and the police say they are patiently waiting for the weed's rightful owners to come and claim the bags.
“If you were expecting these packages and would like to claim them, please come to Police Headquarters,” authorities write in their Facebook post.
Obviously, nobody has yet stepped up to claim the marijuana as theirs. Nonetheless, authorities are confident they will soon track down the would-be traffickers and arrest them.
While the use of recreational marijuana is now legal in 4 states and medicinal marijuana is allowed in 23, mailing this drug across state lines is still a federal offense.
Besides, current laws in New Jersey say that those found in possession of 25 pounds (11.3 kilograms) of pot or maybe more risk fines of up to $300,000 (€272,000), as well as 10 to 20 years in prison.
