eyeOS is certainly one of the most interesting open source projects out there, providing great ways to interact with the "cloud." It's basically an operating system with in-house and third-party developed applications, a user-friendly interface and, best of all, it is available from wherever you are, through a web browser.

Pau Garcia-Milà, one of the eyeOS founders and maintainers, recently announced an exciting new application creation contest for programming enthusiasts all over the world. Participants will have to register (for free) until the 1st of July, while submitting their applications will be possible in the August 1st - August 20th time frame. There is only one important rule: the application cannot be more than 100 KB in size. The winners will be announced on the 21st of September by a jury formed of community leaders, eyeOS founders and other important people from the Free Software movement.

And, if you think that building eyeOS applications is hard, well think again, as with the contest announcement, the eyeOS team also released an awesome tool for building such applications: eyeDesigner, which will help you easily create Graphical Interfaces for your projects.

A contest can't be a contest without some prizes and, if worldwide community recognition does not motivate you enough, find out that the winner will receive a Dell Mini 10v netbook with an Intel Atom Processor Z520, 1GB of RAM, 10.1" Widescreen Display and Intel GMA500 video card. The second place will get 1 TB of storage in the form of a LaCie Network device, while the third place receives a 20" Dell HD Widescreen Monitor capable of a 1600x900 resolution and 5 ms response time.

Also, you can download the eyeDesigner application right now from Softpedia.
