A new Surface Book model is likely just around the corner

Microsoft is projected to take the wraps off new Surface models in the spring, and there’s a good chance the Surface Book 3 would also see daylight on this occasion.

Microsoft typically unveils Surface upgrades in the spring or in the fall, and after the debut of the Surface Pro X, Surface Duo, and Surface Neo last October, it’s believed the early 2020 launch could witness the release of the third-generation Surface Book 3.

Of course, Microsoft has remained completely tight-lipped on everything related to the Surface Book 3, but the rumor mill is hard at work to provide us with an early look at what to expect.

It’s worth reminding that everything you see here is just based on unconfirmed information, so there’s no guarantee the Surface Book 3 will be exactly like this. So take these details with a pinch of salt for now.

In terms of design, the new Surface Book model is unlikely to be much different from its predecessors. The controversial hinge, which is more of a love it or hate it kind of feature, will stick around, and only smaller refinements could be given here and there could make their way to the new Book specifically to provide some extra room for hardware upgrades.

And speaking of hardware upgrades, this is where all the magic is expected to happen.

Previous reports on the matter indicated that the Surface Book 3 will use the 10th Generation Intel processors, so this will be the most powerful model to date. This obviously makes sense, since the last refresh was announced with the second-generation Surface Book back in November 2017, and it looks like Microsoft is also pondering substantial improvements in the graphics adapter area as well.

For example, it’s believed the Surface Book 3 would come with the 16xx series NVIDIA GTX GPUs, with the top-of-the-range model, which will feature a 15-inch screen, to be offered with a Quadro series graphics card.

And speaking of screen sizes, the new model will be offered, just like its predecessor, with a choice of two different displays, namely 13.5-inch and 15-inch. The latter will be the one recommended for professionals and power users, and will obviously come with a higher price.

When it comes to RAM, there’s a good chance Microsoft increases the top configuration from 16GB to 32GB, but this option will obviously come at a cost. Most likely, it’ll be offered on both the top-of-the-line 13-inch and 15-inch models.

As far as the storage is concerned, the top option will include a 1TB SSD.

Microsoft will continue to offer a wide array of configurations for the Surface Book 3, and this makes total sense, as the company wants to offer both a version that will be more affordable and which “regular” users can purchase and a high-end model specifically aimed at those who need more processing power on the go.

Just like the current model, the Surface Book 3 will continue to bet big on touch input, so it’ll still feature a detachable screen. A Surface Pen will also be offered for those who want to write and draw on the screen, and the same modes will be supported. There’s also a chance the battery would receive a series of improvements, including for the screen itself, presumably to allow it to run for longer without being attached to the keyboard.

Full details will be announced by Microsoft shortly, as the debut of the device is expected to take place in April or May, with sales to kick off soon after that.
