Alejandro Díaz from Escuelas Linux wrote to us that his project reaches a major milestone this year, the 20th anniversary, so what better way to celebrate this moment but with a new release.

Continuing the Edubuntu legacy of delivering Linux-based operating systems and Open Source software projects to schools and other educational institutions around the world, Escuelas Linux 6 has been released earlier this month with major improvements and new features. The biggest highlights of this release being the availability of dedicated English language ISO images for non-Spanish users.

"Escuelas Linux 6 as a massive amount of improvements, but one of them is key around Softpedia," said Alejandro Díaz. "And, at this point came your help, that above improvement would not be worth the effort if English language people are not aware of our existence. In fact, we recognize that most downloads from non-Spanish language countries are due to your nice articles about us."

Previous Escuelas Linux released shipped only with a set of live ISO images for Spanish-speaking users, which left English language users with a cumbersome three-step install process where they had to set up the base distro in English, install the Spanish version, and then install an English language pack to finally use Escuelas Linux in English. But that's now a thing of the past, said Alejandro Díaz.

Here's what's new in Escuelas Linux 6 "DNA Release"

Highlights of the Escuelas Linux 6 release include new installation wizard, support for running the operating system in live mode directly from a USB flash drive if you just want to give it a try without installing it, as well as a brand-new, streamlined wizard for highlighting the advantages and beauty of using the Enlightenment-based Moksha desktop.

As usual, Escuelas Linux ships with up-to-date applications and core components based on the latest Bodhi Linux release, which in turn is based on the latest LTS (Long Term Supported) Ubuntu release. Escuelas Linux 6 includes the LibreOffice 6.1.1, OnlyOffice 5.1, and Softmaker FreeOffice 2018 office suites, Mozilla Firefox 62, Google Chrome 69, Chromium 69, and Vivaldi 1.15 web browsers.

It also comes with the GIMP 2.10.6 image editor, Krita 4.1 digital painting program, LiveCode 9.0.1 visual software development environment, Kdenlive 17.12 video editor, VLC 3.0.3 media player, as well as numerous other general-purpose apps, many in-house build tools, and a robust selection of educational-oriented apps like Gcompris, Geogebra, wxMaxima, PSPP, and all of the KDE-Edu apps.

Escuelas Linux 6.1 "DNA Release" is now the latest version of the Linux-based operating system designed for educational purposes, which introduces a more robust clipboard, the Etcher tool for writing ISO images to USB sticks, and Linux kernel 4.18.8. You can download Escuelas Linux 6.1 it right now from our website for either older, 32-bit computer or newer, UEFI-based 64-bit machines in English or Spanish versions.
