Ricky Gervais was nominated for an Emmy at last night’s 67th annual ceremony, held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, but he didn’t win. Gervais joked that it wouldn’t matter if he ended up going home empty-handed or not, because no one remembered who won what 2 weeks after the show.

Before the winner in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Mini-Series or Movie, where Gervais was nominated for “Derek: The Special,” was announced, he was up on stage to present for another category, that of Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (which went to Tony Hale for “Veep”).

He tried to turn his presenting gig into the perfect opportunity to trick people into believing he got to go home with the statuette.

“Back again!” Gervais proclaimed the moment he was up on stage. “To lose another one. Go on. I haven’t lost yet. Still hope. There’s no hope.”

Calling out for “the Emmy girl,” he got her to bring him the Emmy, and he proceeded to pose with it, feigning a crying fit, as if he had just won and was at a loss for words. This way, he laughed, when people looked at the photos 2 weeks later, they would assume he was crying because he was one of the winners.

After this brief moment of comedy, Gervais handed the Emmy to its rightful owner, Tony Hale. Viewers at home posting to social media found the segment incredibly funny.
