New elementary OS ISOs are now available for download, as the developing team has published the official images for version 5.1.2.

“The release of elementary OS 5.1 Hera marked the first time we built the stable ISO for elementary OS via our new, completely open source pipeline. With the new process, it has become much easier to tag and release incremental builds of the OS, and consequently today we’ve released a new spin of the 5.1 ISO,” Keli Grubb, elementary OS developer, said today.

The new ISO images obviously come with lots of improvements, including all the updates that were part of the January 2020 release.

For example, this new version comes with Code 3.2, Terminal version 5.5.1, Files, and System Settings refinements, so using these ISOs for a clean install provides you with the latest release of elementary OS.

Latest sudo patch also included

Additionally, the dev team says you’ll also get hardware and security updates, including the critical sudo fix that was released earlier this month.

A 10-year-old sudo bug was finally patched in the latest update. The vulnerability allowed unprivileged users to obtain root access on devices where pwfeedback was enabled and sudo version was lower than 1.8.26.

Additionally, the new elementary OS ISO images include the latest 18.04.3 hardware enablement (HWE) Stack available in Ubuntu.

“Thanks to the HWE updates, elementary OS is now using the the 5.3 Linux kernel which also improves support for newer devices and peripherals—especially AMD Navi GPUs and 2015 MacBook keyboards and trackpads,” the elementary OS team explains.

Keep in mind that these ISO images are specifically aimed at those who want to clean-install the operating system and start fresh on a computer. Otherwise, elementary OS users are getting all the aforementioned improvements as part of the OS updates shipped to their devices.
