The problem is likely caused by a firmware update

Microsoft has started shipping the Surface Earbuds to the first buyers, and as it turns out, owners have already discovered the very first issues with the new device.

More specifically, a number of Surface Earbuds users are complaining on the Microsoft forums about a hissing noise that is more noticeable when turning on the device.

“As soon as the earbuds amplifier is on, this constant noise starts and is very annoying especially at low levels. Tried them with Surface Pro and iPhone, same result. It is in my knowledge a unique case (not happening with my Sennheiser Momentum or my AirPods Pro),” one buyer explains on the forums.

Dr. Windows noticed the same problem and speculates that it might all be caused by the update to firmware version 3.0.0.5, which has recently been released by Microsoft for early adopters.

Issue could be fixed with a firmware update

The bigger problem, however, is that the hissing noise happens more often for some people, and it’s not just limited to the moment the Surface Earbuds are turned on. Basically, the hissing occurs every time a new sound is sent to the Earbuds, no matter the device they are paired with.

“Basically, whenever there is about to be sound played - such as unlocking of the phone, start of a phone call or music, white noise hissing appears, sometimes with a "pop" and then lasts about 2-3 seconds after the sound stops. Even if no sound is played, quick locking or unlocking of the phone results in a 3 second noticeable white noise hissing sound,” someone explains on the forums.

A Microsoft forum moderator says the reports have already been forwarded to the Microsoft Surface team and more information would be shared on this in the coming weeks as the investigation on the whole thing advances.
