Revealed earlier this week after it leaked on the internet, EA's new Star Wars game already has a release date. Presented as a multiplayer adventure in the Star Wars universe, Squadrons has been confirmed to arrive on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on October 2.

Star Wars: Squadrons isn't a triple-A game, which is why EA has decided to price it at just $40, which is still high if you're not into multiplayer stuff. Despite the fact that the game does feature a single-player campaign, this will act as a training session for the multiplayer mode, so don't expect something more than 2-4 hours.

During the EA Play Live event, it's been revealed that the single-player campaign will allow players to switch between pilots belonging to two different factions: Galactic Empire and Rebel Alliance. That's because the game wants to teach you to pilots all ships that will be available in the multiplayer mode, such as X-Wings and Tie Fighters.

In Squadrons, players will be able to choose between different types of ships that fulfill various roles, like damage dealers, support, defenders, and so on, much like in any MOBA. There will be a bucketload of items to be gained in-game, some will improve your ships, while others are purely cosmetic.

The starfighter dogfighting game revolves around five-on-five team battles, although EA hinted at quite complex matches that involve complex objectives that must be achieved in order to win. Along with all these details, EA launched a “gameplay trailer” that shows more Squadrons action.

Unfortunately, what we're seeing in the trailer doesn't seem to be actual gameplay, but rather scripted battles, so it's hard to tell how the game will play. On the bright side, we're still several months away from the game's launch, so there's enough time for EA to reveal more details about the game.

Last but not least, it's important to mention that Star Wars: Squadrons will feature VR support on both PC and PlayStation 4, as well as cross-play between platforms.
