Electronic Arts and Respawn Entertainment have just announced their latest project, Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, a new game that's being developed from the ground up exclusively for VR (virtual reality).

We realize that it's not the game many of you have wanted, but EA is afraid to truly revive the old-school first-person shooter. Anyway, the publisher revealed at the Oculus Connect 6 developer conference that Respawn's Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, an action-packed immersive VR experience features a deep single-player campaign, which takes players through historic events on land, air, and sea.

The game is set in World War II, where you step into the boots of an agent of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) who's fighting all over Europe. Fully compatible with the Oculus Rift, the upcoming title promises to offer an unrivaled gameplay experience that transports you back to Europe in the 1940s.

Medal of Honor has always been about celebrating the everyday people who did extraordinary things in the face of overwhelming odds, and Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond continues that tradition in new and unique ways. Using interviews and 360° footage, we’ve had the privilege of capturing powerful first-hand stories from combat veterans of the war, using state-of-the-art technology to preserve their stories for future generations,” said Peter Hirschman, the producer and writer of the original 1999 game.

At the end of the announcement, Hirschmann mysteriously confirmed that Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond also includes multiplayer, but all details “are still classified as top secret.” We'll let you know more about that aspect once EA declassifies these details.

There's not much information about release and pricing, but Mike Verdu, the head of VR and AR content at Facebook, said Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond is scheduled for release in 2020, so that's all we have for now.
