Calibre 1.28, the eBook reader and management software developed for multiple platforms, including Linux, has been made available for download and features even more improvements for the Edit Book functions.

The Calibre developer is pushing out updates almost on a weekly basis, with very few exceptions. The current update is centered on Book Edition and on how to improve that particular feature. For example, a tool has been added to easily insert hyperlinks and this can be done by clicking the insert hyperlink button on the toolbar.

Also, a new tool has been implemented to easily open a file inside the book. This is very useful for editing the book just by typing a few characters from the file name. To use this function, you need to press Ctrl+T in the editor or go to Edit->Quick open a file to edit'.

A very interesting change was made to the way the notifications work for the book-editing feature. Users can now turn off the completion popups for the search and replace fields. This can be done by right-clicking on the search and replace field to enable or disable the completion popup.

The developer didn't forget about the Ebook viewer and made some modifications in that area of the software. Users can now control the maximum text height in full screen, although this can only be done if the viewer is in paged mode (default).

A number of important fixes have also been implemented. For example, when Calibre fails to convert metadata to backup OPF, the application no longer retries to do it, the file permissions for the edited book are no longer being changed, and pressing the Esc key to leave full screen mode now changes the state of the full screen button, as it should.

Also, in the book details panel, the author's URL (if present) is now shown in tooltip when hovering over author names, the Kobo firmware has been updated for the latest devices, and the news sources have been updated.

If you’ve decided to compile your own version of Calibre, be warned. It has a lot of dependencies and it can be quite tricky. Fortunately, the developer also provides a complete list of dependencies, if you feel brave enough.
