On Friday, global leader in mobile commerce and the world’s largest online marketplace eBay announced the world wide availability of its mobile application for handsets running under Google's Android operating system. According to the company, the software solution is meant to make global shopping easier.

The application has been made available as a free download from the Android Market in Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom too, and comes as an upgraded version of the older eBay software solution. The international Android application comes with upgrades for “My eBay” and with PayPal checkout, as well as with voice search capabilities unique to the Android platform.

The features list of the eBay application for Android includes: - Buyer alerts – Stay up to date on the status of auctions and watched items with timely alerts - Daily Deals – View limited time bargains on popular items, where items are often more than 50% off the original price and include free shipping - Feedback – Leave Feedback for items bought and sold within the application - Payments – PayPal account users can purchase items directly through the application - View Sellers Other Items – View what other items a particular seller has to offer across eBay - Voice search – In addition to type search, the eBay application comes enabled with speech-to-text voice search

The upgraded version of the application can offer an enhanced experience via My eBay, with an easy to use interface for fast access to listings, watched items, bids and sales, or with the possibility to share items via social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, or to email them to friends and family. Buyers and sellers can receive and reply to messages via My eBay, all straight from the application.

“The popularity of eBay’s mobile shopping applications is quickly spreading across multiple geographies,” said Steve Yankovich, vice president of mobile, eBay Inc. “More than half of eBay’s mobile gross merchandise volume comes from outside of the United States. As we seek to reduce friction in commerce, we are taking advantage of the unique features of each mobile platform. In the case of our Android app, we’re leveraging the Android’s voice search capabilities to make searching easier and faster.”
