Here is what can happen if you drop it, even when protected

Once again, it turns out that innovating in the smartphone business doesn't always make a product better. The amazing Xiaomi Mi Mix was unveiled late last month, but its sales are limited to China only.

The smartphone that promises a screen-to-body ratio of more than 91% is hard to protect even when kept in a solid case. We reported earlier this month that due to the very thin bezels, the Mi Mix was unlikely to survive a drop.

There was one case in particular that we wrote about, which concerns a Mi Mix owner who accidentally dropped his phone and the display broke. We decided that a case might have allowed the smartphone to endure the drop, had it had one.

However, a new report coming from China claims that even when encased, the Mi Mix will not survive a mere half a meter drop. The good news is there's a chance that your display won't shatter, but the drop will still damage your phone.

It's worth mentioning that repairing the Mi Mix's shattered display could cost owners up to $195, so spending much less for a case is advisable. The protected Xiaomi Mi Mix had the damage reduced to a minor crack in the front glass, but it was still damaged.

Repairs for such damage cost less, but still cost. The Mi Mix seems to be the most fragile smartphone Xiaomi has ever made. If you're the type of person who frequently drops his or her phone, you might want to avoid buying one, or at least buy a sturdy case as well.

Xiaomi is using ceramic as the main compound for the manufacture of the Mi Mix, but while durable enough, ceramic can't withstand drops on hard surfaces.

Since the Xiaomi Mi Mix is a large and heavy (209g) device, the impact with the ground can be fatal for its display, frame, or both.

So, aside from the case that we'd suggest using if you plan to buy the Mi Mix, it's recommended to pay for a yearly smartphone insurance as well, which costs around $36 in China. If you don't want to do that, stay away from Xiaomi's Mi Mix phablet.
