The rumor says that it's still in the prototype phase

DICE, the studio responsible for the modern Battlefield and Star Wars titles among many others, is reportedly working on a new battle royale-type game.

There is no denying that battle royale, a type of multiplayer game where a large number of people are dropped in a remote location, and only one can survive, is becoming something that everyone must have. Studios from all over the world are now rushing to either make or implement this type of gameplay, so expect to see a flood of such titles in the next couple of years.

We are just hearing that the latest Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 dropped the single-player campaign and developers are focusing on the multiplayer and the addition of a new battle royale mode. It should come as no surprise that DICE is looking to build something on the same lines.

Building on a strong foundation

We have to keep in mind that DICE is also the owner of a very powerful and efficient engine that’s being used in all types of games beginning with Star Wars and ending with FIFA. It’s called Frostbite, and it already proved to be a winner.

According to a report on VentureBeat that’s quoting “someone with knowledge of the studio who asked to remain anonymous,” DICE is investigating whether to make a game such as Fortnite or PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.

The interesting aspect is that Frostbite is not all that well suited for such large-scale environments, which means that either they will have to improve it further or make something new.

Make no mistake about it, Electronic Arts probably has a number of such prototypes in the works, but only a small number, if any, will actually see the light of day. Until then, players will go in swarms to play Fortnite and PUBG, and EA will have to be contented to sit back and watch.
