14 DAY TRIAL // The Dyne.org foundation has announced the general availability of the first point release of the Devuan GNU/Linux 2.x "ASCII" operating system series.
Coming one and a half year after the release of the Devuan GNU/Linux 2.0 "ASCII" operating system series, Devuan GNU/Linux 2.1 is here as the first major point release to add the latest software and security updates, as well as various improvements around the installer and the installation mediums.
Still based on the Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch" operating system series, Devuan GNU/Linux 2.1 comes with an improved installer that makes the option to choose the OpenRC init system more prominent so you can't miss it and no longer requires an Expert install.
However, the Expert install options continue to be needed ifo want to exclude non-free firmware or use a different bootloader, such as LILO. Moreover, the installer now features deb.devuan.org as default mirror, so you'll have to check here if you need to use a mirror closer to your location.
Security updates, ISO changes, and more
Devuan GNU/Linux 2.1 also ships with all the latest security updates, including Linux kernel 4.9.0-9 (4.9.168-1+deb9u4) to fix multiple vulnerabilities, apt 1.4.9 to fix CVE-2019-3462, Mozilla Firefox ESR 60.8.0esr-1~deb9u1 to fix several vulnerabilities, and policykit-1 to fix CVE-2018-19788 and CVE-2019-6133.
Other than that, the live ISO images now feature more useful programs, such as memtest86+, mdadm, and lvm2, and a new D-Bus patch that can generate new dbus machine-id on boot has been added as well, which can be configured in /etc/default/dbus.
