While working on the upcoming Galaxy Note 8, the successor to last year’s smartphone that was discontinued, Samsung also reportedly started development on the Galaxy S9 early. The smartphone will be codenamed Star, according to Korean publication The Bell.

The Galaxy S9 is expected to arrive in early 2018, possibly late March, while the Galaxy S8 was announced during the end of the third month of this year, later than its predecessor, the Galaxy S7. The report mentions that development of the Galaxy S9 started 3 to 4 months ahead of schedule.

The upcoming smartphone is said to be made available in two variants, one that will carry the codename Star and a larger model that will feature the codename Star 2. The previous Galaxy S8 was codenamed Project Dream, while the Galaxy Note 8 is internally referred to as Great. Obviously, Samsung assigned a different codename to the Galaxy S9, possibly Star.

Still, this information should be taken with a grain of salt, considering that Samsung is currently working on the Galaxy Note 8, expected to arrive later this year. In addition, it’s a bit early to start development for a flagship that should arrive next year, considering the importance of the Galaxy Note 8, as the successor to last year’s discontinued Galaxy Note 7.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 platform should be featured on the Galaxy S9

Details about the Galaxy S9 are obviously scarce, but the company is said to equip the new phone with the same Infinity Display, first introduced on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus earlier this year. In addition, the smartphone is expected to come with the next flagship platform from Qualcomm, Snapdragon 845, developed in partnership with Samsung.

Reports from Korea say that the Galaxy S9 won’t bring many improvements to key features on the Galaxy S8 or S8 Plus. It could feature a dual-camera setup and a fingerprint scanner built into the display, but it's too early to say for sure. A dual-lens setup will arrive on the Galaxy Note 8, after it is introduced on the Galaxy C10 first. 12MP and 13MP sensors are expected to be part of the dual-camera setup on the back of the Galaxy Note 8.
