Video game developer Bungie is announcing that it plans to implement a maintenance period for the servers that power Destiny on Tuesday, August 18, starting at 10 AM Pacific Daylight Time, with the company not yet ready to say how long the process will last for.

The information comes from the official support account for the social shooter and explains that gamers might be asked to login into the title again when the process starts.

Bungie also says that it needs the maintenance period to deliver the rewards that some members of the community have earned for their help during the Nepal earthquake crisis and to make other tweaks.

The studio is not making it clear whether it plans to deliver an actual update or hotfix for Destiny during the process or if all the changes that it makes will be on the server side, and gamers will not be able to notice any differences in terms of gameplay.

When the new 1.2.0.5 patch for the shooter was delivered last week, the company suggested that it was not planning to offer another until the new Taken King expansion arrives on September 15.

Destiny is preparing for some major changes

The Taken King is the biggest expansion the title has received since launch and Bungie are keen to make clear that gamers understand how fundamentally the core experience will be transformed.

Gamers will see their Guardians rely more on experience for progression, and the 2.0 update that is coming is also set to make sweeping changes to the balance of weapons and some other mechanics.

The Taken King also brings a big six main raid that will give gamers a chance to face Oryx, a powerful new boss who comes into the fight determined to avenge his son Crota.

The dreadnought that he owns will offer a massive new area to explore, and there are more powerful enemies that are being introduced to Destiny.

Before the launch of The Taken King, Bungie is planning to deliver three live streaming sessions during which the fans will be able to get a closer look at the various changes, with commentary from the developers.
