Two different models are in the cards: 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch

Before going all in with a product, a serious company gets it through a series of tests, and when it comes to smartphones, several prototypes are first released for internal testing, which usually feature different specs.

We have no doubt that Apple's products need to go through similar testing processes, most likely more complex than we can imagine. One of the decisions the Cupertino-based company has to make for the next year's iPhone is the size of the display and if it would be wise to launch three versions of its flagships in 2017.

One of the most recent rumors that made headlines is the fact that Apple might release three iPhone 8 models next year with different displays: 4.7-inch, 5-inch, and 5.5-inch. All three versions would feature glass backs made by Biel and Lens.

However, AppleInsider reports that one of its sources claims Apple is determined to stick with the standard 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhone models, so, at least for now, a 5-inch version is out of the question.

On the other hand, there's always the possibility that Apple will launch an improved version of the iPhone SE next year. That specific model might have a 5-inch display, but it would be released as an iPhone 8. We'll probably know more about the number of iPhone 8 versions as we're getting closer to Apple's 10-year anniversary.

Glass is the way to go

The same source revealed a few other details, like the fact that these iPhone 8 models will feature a “glass sandwich” chassis that includes an AMOLED display.

What's more, Apple is exploring other ideas as well, which means the iPhone 8 is still being prototyped and a final decision about its design hasn't been made yet.

Apple is likely to have a contingency plan in case the glass design doesn't meet all the requirements, but it's unclear what other materials the company may choose for its upcoming iPhone 8 flagship.
