14 DAY TRIAL // Desktop Dungeons: Rewind is the upcoming title for South African studio QCF Design. The 3D remake of the award-winning, tactical dungeon crawler is coming to PC “as soon as it’s ready,” publisher Prismatika announced early this month.
The game smartly blends tactical roguelike action elements and dungeon crawling. As the name suggests, in Desktop Dungeons: Rewind, you’ll be exploring small dungeons from a top-down perspective. The game will feature a diverse cast of (replaceable) characters to choose from, as well as some interesting mechanics.
The most important one, which is also part of the game’s name, “rewind” allows players to turn back time in case their characters die. After death, you’ll be able to replay a dungeon from an earlier point to try a different strategy.
Another interesting gameplay feature is the heal mechanic. In Desktop Dungeons: Rewind, players heal and regain mana by simply exploring and revealing hidden terrain. However, you’ll have to be very careful when planning your route, as to not challenge the final boss before you’re absolutely certain you can actually take them on.
Besides the dungeon crawling aspect, Desktop Dungeons: Rewind will also include a kingdom management system, where players can trade trophies for gold to upgrade their settlement. The bigger your settlement, the easier will be to attract skilled adventurers to recruit.
“Founding a new kingdom isn’t easy: it takes cunning, manpower, and lots and lots of gold. How will you pay for the outrageously overpriced taverns and banks? Better descend into the dungeons and steal riches from the deadly inhabitants any way you can.”
Although the game doesn’t have a launch date yet, the studio targets a Q4 2022 window frame at the moment. If you haven’t played the original Desktop Dungeons, you can get it on Steam, but don’t forget to wishlist Desktop Dungeons: Rewind while you’re at it.
