A nice idea that shows the problem with generic landing pages for almost all of today's tech startups

If you're looking for something interesting to share on Twitter, Facebook, or Google+, this project from Sahil Vhora, designer at BackBencher Developers, is just what you need to look smart & trendy in front of your friends.

Asking himself, "What if Facebook started in 2015?" Mr. Vhora designed a landing page for Facebook, but in the same style used for most of today's startup websites.

Yes, most of the startup homepages you see today have a similar style that makes you think they were designed by the same person.

They all use a landing page layout (also known as intro page), where a preview of some features are presented with a short description while the user scrolls down.

Most of today's startups seem to be using a similar design for their landing pages

We're not taking a jab at Mr. Vhora, whose execution was flawless and had a unique idea, but more at the lack of imagination of other designers when creating landing pages for various tech startups.

As Andreas Ubbe Dall, product designer at Virool, puts it, the design is "almost seems unintentionally satirical," just because most of today's startups seem to have no imagination in promoting their products.

Joe Blau, iOS developer at Amazon, also pointed out that "In the past 5 years no major social network has been a website first: Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp, Vine, Periscope, Meerkat, Yo, Ello."

Similar concepts for WhatsApp, Messenger, Twitter are on their way

We reached out to Mr. Vhora and asked him how it all started. "Facebook as a startup was just a random thought. It just came up when I was exploring the landing pages of startup companies. So I thought it would be amazing if I design a landing page for any existing company by conceptualizing it as a startup. And I'm a really big fan of Facebook, so I just decided to go with it first," he said.

Asked if he plans to expand his idea to other services, he added, "For future, I'm also looking forward to design pages for WhatsApp, Messenger, Twitter, etc.... But all in my free time."
