Surface Duo hinge said to be affected by a design problem

Microsoft’s Surface Duo is a pretty innovative device, and one of its key parts is the hinge that keeps the two screens together and allows for several form factors.

Microsoft has become the master of hinges, and the Surface Book itself is one of the first confirmations in this regard. But with the Surface Duo, the company has pushed things even further, pretty much using an approach that has already attracted the attention of other rivals.

In the meantime, however, the hinge on the Surface Duo might have a hard time dealing with intensive usage in the long term.

Several users are reporting on reddit, via MSPU, that the hinge is now experiencing small problems like different movements from the internal components.

“Basically the top hinge, the left will move but the right one will stick... I have to push the hinge itself to get it to align right,” one user explains.

Replacement units coming with the same problems

Others say that the hinge problem affects the full-flat form factor because the two screens are no longer aligned. But what’s worse is that replacement units, which Microsoft has apparently offered to customers who reported the problem, come with the same issue, so it’s now believed that the whole thing could actually be a design flaw hitting the Duo.

“I too am experience this issue. I exchanged phones and second phone has same problem. It's not that big of a deal with now... But definitely getting MS complete just in case. Even though I would consider it a design flaw.. Better to have a plan that will cover most things anyway,” someone else explains.

At the time of writing, Microsoft hasn’t said anything about this possible design flaw, so it remains to be seen if more customers come across similar issues.
