Dell has recently announced a new BIOS security tool that is specifically aimed at commercial PCs, with the company explaining that such a solution comes in handy especially as more companies have started working remotely.

The so-called Dell SafeBIOS Events & Indicators of Attack (IoA) can detect attacks at BIOS level and help deal with endpoint threats more effectively.

“Organizations need the ability to detect when a malicious actor is on the move, altering BIOS configurations on endpoints as part of a larger attack strategy. SafeBIOS now provides the unique ability to generate Indicators of Attack on BIOS configurations, including changes and events that can signal an exploit,” Dell says.

“When BIOS configuration changes are detected that indicate a potential attack, security and IT teams are quickly alerted in their management consoles, allowing for swift isolation and remediation. SafeBIOS Events & IoA provides IT teams the visibility into BIOS configuration changes and analyzes these for potential threats – even during an ongoing attack.”

More Dell changes for companies working from home

The company further explains that blocking attacks at BIOS level gives IT admins the opportunity to minimize the damage of a breach. The new app can be installed today on Dell commercial PCs as part of the Dell Trusted Device solution, the company says.

BIOS attacks are particularly dangerous for organizations because such a breach technically provides an attacker with full control of the compromised machine, which also includes access to the stored data. Malware deployed at BIOS level is also more difficult to remove, with attacks also able to use such an exploit to expand to other endpoints in the network.

Dell has also announced additional changes that should help companies working from home, including temporary licenses for Dell Encryption until May 15, 2020. Furthermore, Dell says VMWare Carbon black has removed endpoint limits until June 20 this year.
