A run-based adventure involving deckbuilding

All my block cards simply refuse to show up. My character throws a fireball, puts up metal scales for protection (which also have the side-effect of healing me), and then throws in a classic sword strike. Three enemies are facing me and all of them physically strike me, causing some solid damage. Finally, I get two blocks, which I promptly use, and set up a living blade to hopefully take down one of the opponents. I will not probably make it out of here alive but there’s always another run to look forward to.

Deepest Chamber is in development at Balcony Softworks while publishing duties are handled by Those Awesome Guys. The title is available in Early Access on Steam and the plan is to continue working on it for at least 12 months.

The core idea is very simple: explore a city that moved underground, battling creatures and twisted humans, all using cards. The mechanics are easy to pick up and the way most cards work will be familiar to fans of the concept. The card battles are good, although it bugs me that fireballs target just one enemy.

To spice up runs Deepest Chamber adds trinkets, which affect game mechanics and can introduce new strategies, and potions, to improve the deck and more. Finally, gamers can get candles, which will give players permanent bonuses that will improve their success rate.

Both character health and gold can be used to get cards and trinkets, which is a neat twist. The game has good mechanics but there’s nothing radically new here. Deepest Chamber uses a low fantasy setting and 3D graphics to depict its world, which is a change from what most titles in the genre opt for.

I like the enemy design quite a bit, but the underworld theme and brown and gray world will probably be a little too depressing for some gamers. The music is very easy to forget.

Conclusion

Deepest Chamber is sailing into a crowded space and that means the Early Access period is very important. The development team is emphasizing how much it is listening to the players. Solid feedback should lead to improved mechanics and maybe to one solid innovation to make the game stand out from the crowd.

The core card-based mechanics are good and so is the way trinkets and potions affect a run. The world needs to be flashed out a little more. And I hope that Deepest Chamber knows that card synergies are some of the features of the genre that fans love best and adds a few more.
