The developers behind the Debian-based Q4OS Linux operating system informed Softpedia about the availability of the Q4OS 2.5 stable release for ARM devices, including the Raspberry Pi.

Q4OS emphasizes the Trinity Desktop Environment (TDE), which continues the legacy of the old KDE 3.5 desktop. The latest release, Q4OS 2.5, was available only for 64-bit (x86_64) and 32-bit (i686 PAE) hardware architectures, but now it can also be installed on ARM hardware like the Raspberry Pi, Pine64, and Pinebook.

"Q4OS on Raspberry Pi performs at lightning speed due to its exceptionally low hardware requirements," say the devs in the announcement. "All the native Q4OS features, for example "Desktop profiler" and "Setup tool," are available and fully functional within the Raspberry Pi Q4OS edition."

Q4OS is now optimized for Raspberry Pi devices

A lot of work went into optimizing the Q4OS operating system for ARM devices, and while users can download and install it on the well-known Pine64 single-board computer and the Pinebook ARM laptop, the Q4OS 2.5 "Scorpion" release is optimized for Raspberry Pi devices.

Q4OS Raspberry Pi edition is based on the latest stable Raspbian operating system from the Raspberry Pi Foundation, which in turn is based on the latest Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch" operating system series. It uses a full-fledged Trinity R14.0.5 desktop environment by default.

Those of you who want to try something new on your Raspberry Pi, you can download the Q4OS 2.5 "Scorpion" Raspberry Pi image from our software portal or the Q4OS website. To use it, install the image on an SD card using the instructions provided by the developers here. Alternatively, you can buy an SD card with Q4OS pre-installed.
