Cyberattacks on prominent US institutions continue to occur

According to a statement from Republican National Committee, cybercriminals gained access to the IT infrastructure of one of the committee's contractors, Synnex. Although the infrastructure was breached, no data was lost as a result of the cyberattack, says NPR.

If the alleged source of the attack (REvil) is confirmed, it will be the second major cyber attack launched by a Russian network against the United States in the last period. More than 200 U.S. organizations were affected by a massive ransomware cyberattack conducted by the REVil Russian cybercriminal gang over the weekend.

Richard Walters, chief of staff at RNC posted on Twitter "We immediately blocked all access from Synnex accounts to our cloud environment,"[...]"Our team worked with Microsoft to conduct a review of our systems and after a thorough investigation, no RNC data was accessed. We will continue to work with Microsoft, as well as federal law enforcement officials on this matter."

Cyberattacks on high-profile institutions in the United States continue to occur

Even though Biden claimed that American businesses experienced only minor damage as a result of the largest cyberattack in history, the fallout from the strike is still being observed. In order to improve cybersecurity defenses, the President of the U.S. and Vice President Harris met with leaders from the intelligence community, as well as representatives from the Departments of State, Justice, and Homeland Security to discuss the United States' plan to prevent and combat cyberattacks.

Biden's attempt to persuade Russian President Vladimir Putin in Geneva last month appears to have failed. Many organizations that were among the sectors on Biden's list that he handed over to Putin were attacked anyway. Worse, the United States was unable to respond in a timely and effective manner.

Authorities have yet to confirm the identify those responsible for the cyberattack. For the time being, the FBI has been informed, but the Bureau had no comments on the matter.
