Almost one year after it was announced, Gello will finally reach a select range of devices that run CyanogenMod 13 operating system. The list is available on CyanogenMod Italia. The browser is based on Google’s Chromium source code, the same that was used for creating Google Chrome and other browsers like Opera, Vivaldi, and Blisk.

Gello will come with all the features that users can find in Chrome, as well as some CyanogenMod tools. It will allow them to swipe left or right on the edge of the smartphone to move backward or forward between webpages. It’s a really useful feature since users will no longer have to browse through tabs to search for open pages.

The status bar on Gello has the ability to change colors depending on the color of the favicon of the currently open website. Users will have the option to save pages for offline reading, an essential feature when there’s no Internet connection.

Gello will also come with power saving mode, which allows users to browse the Internet and visit webpages without worrying about battery drainage. Night mode will be supported, and it will also feature immersive mode.

Gello to come with feature for preventing apps to read webview content

The browser will boast the LookLock feature that prevents all other applications to read the webview content, and it will have a feature for sharing a page screenshot and link instead of link only.

One year after it was announced, Gello is finally ready to hit select builds of CyanogenMod 13, and the list of supported devices might be updated soon. Installing Gello isn’t as simple as downloading the APK because Chromium source code needs to be built in a specific build environment. It needs to be compiled, and the APK has to be exported as pre-built to the Android system.

Developer Joey Rizzoli has stated that it can take up as much as 40GB of drive space. Still, there is a way for supported devices to get their own version of the Gello, as weekly APKs will be compiled by the Jenkins server for users who want to check it out. The APKs will be available in both official and unofficial builds.
