In a surprising turn of events, Cuphead has just made its way to PlayStation 4. The game was launched back in 2019 as an Xbox console exclusive and supports Xbox Play Anywhere, which means that progress saves on both Xbox One and PC.

A Nintendo Switch port was announced one year ago and release just one month later. However, there was no mention of a PlayStation 4 port, so we were quite surprised to see the game listed in the PlayStation Store.

Developed by Canadian studio StudioMDHR, Cuphead is heavily inspired by the rubber hose style of animation used in cartoons of the 1930s, such as the work of Walt Disney Animation Studios. The game has been praised by both critics and players and achieved commercial success selling over six million copies within three years.

Furthermore, Netflix acknowledged the game's success and decided to release an animated series based on Cuphead, which is likely to be launched in 2020.

The game does feature a co-op mode where two players take control of animated characters – Cuphead and his brother Mugman, to fight through several levels that always culminate in boss fights.

Here is the blurb from the PlayStation Store: “Cuphead is a classic run and gun action game heavily focused on boss battles. Inspired by cartoons of the 1930s, the visuals and audio are painstakingly created with the same techniques of the era: traditional hand-drawn cel animation, watercolor backgrounds, and original jazz recordings.

Play as Cuphead or Mugman (in single player or local co-op) as you traverse strange worlds, acquire new weapons, learn powerful super moves, and discover hidden secrets while you try to pay your debt back to the devil!

Depending on the region, Cuphead for PlayStation 4 is available for purchase for just $20 / €20 / £16, a small price to pay for a truly wonderful game.
