Commodore, once a leader in personal computers is now back from the dead, but not with a new computer as many would think. The company announced its first Android smartphone, the Commodore PET, which will be launched in Europe later this week.

Lots of companies that had nothing to do with the smartphone business are now launching Android handsets in the hopes that they will manage to get a slice of the profits.

It looks like Commodore is one of those companies that are now trying to revitalize their brand, and what better way to do that than by launching a smartphone.

The company chose a custom variant of Android 5.0 Lollipop OS to power its PET smartphone, but in order to differentiate it from other handsets, it also added two emulators (VICE C64 emulator, and a Uae4All2-SDL Amiga) for retro-style gaming.

According to Wired, Commodore PET will be available in two versions: 16GB storage and 2GB RAM, as well as 32GB internal memory and 3GB RAM.

Play old games, but do business as well

They will be available in some European countries (Italy, France, Germany and Poland) later this week for $300 and $365, respectively. But Commodore plans to introduce the PET to the US and other European countries very soon as well.

It's also worth mentioning that the Commodore PET will come with a 32GB microSD memory card in the sales package. The offer is available for both versions of the smartphone.

Moving on to specs, Commodore PET is equipped with a 5.5-inch IPS capacitive touchscreen display that supports full HD (1080p) resolution.

It also comes with dual-SIM support, as well as 13-megapixel rear-facing camera with autofocus, LED flash and full HD (1080p) video recording.

Commodore PET is powered by a 64-bit 1.7GHz octa-core MediaTek processor, which is paired with either 2GB or 3GB of RAM. There's also a secondary 8-megapixel selfie camera in the front.

Last but not least, Commodore PET will be powered by a 3,000 mAh battery, which has yet to be rated by the manufacturer.
