The famous Coleco company is making a comeback with a new console named COLECO Chameleon, which uses old-style cartridges.

A lot of people got excited at the news that Coleco is coming back with a console, and a cartridge-based one at that. On the other hand, a lot of people are also asking the obvious question. Why? What's the point? Is this getting released just to satisfy the melancholy of some gamers?

Believe or not, Coleco started its life as making leather but somehow moved onto other things, like game consoles and cartridges for other consoles. It rose and fell with the rest of the companies in the big ‘80s game market crash. Now it's back with a console that tries to bring back the old days. Unfortunately, calling this console new is not correct.

Chameleon is actually RETRO VGS

Just a couple of months ago, a crowdfunding campaign for a console named RETRO VGS failed on Indiegogo, miserably. The makers of this console wanted 1.9 million dollars, and they got just shy of $81,000.

Now, Coleco just picked up this console and says that it's releasing it in 2016 and that it will soon be available for a demo.

"COLECO Chameleon is a versatile new video-game system that serves as a modern-day take on the classic game console and will accurately play classic games from the past. The COLECO Chameleon also has the ability play brand-new games in the 8-, 16- and 32-bit styles, a growing and popular genre in today’s game scape," reads the official announcement.

They are not doing this just for the kicks. What they actually have in mind is shipping games in plastic cases with instruction manuals and game developer liner notes. It remains to be seen if there are enough melancholic players out there who also have money to spend.

COLECO Chameleon will be shown at the Toy Fair New York 2016, February 13-16, so until then we can only wait.
