14 DAY TRIAL // Star Wars Episode I: Racer is a podracing game features in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. As the name suggests, the game features racers and race course on Tatooine included in the movie, but also adds several new race courses on other planets.
The game has several single-player modes, as well as a tournament mode. Moreover, Star Wars Episode I: Racer includes a multiplayer mode, which can be played in various modes depending on the platform.
Originally released in 1999, the game was re-released on various platforms many times in the past. The most recent re-releases date from 2018 when the game was published on GOG.com and one year ago when Disney and LucasArts launched it on replica Nintendo 64 cartridges as a collector's item.
Recently, Aspyr, the studio responsible for bringing many old Star Wars games to modern platforms, confirmed Star Wars Episode I: Racer will be released on PlayStation 4, in addition to Nintendo Switch.
The PlayStation 4 version is called “definitive edition” because it combines the best elements of all versions of the game. For example, the PS4 version has all the FMV sequences uprezzed. Output resolutions have been changed in the last decade, and the same goes for file size restrictions, which allowed developers to natively re-export everything into greatly increased resolutions that will look better than ever.
Also, Aspyr re-mapped all the controls to make the game suitable for PS4's DualShock 4 controller. Last but not least, trophy hunters will be pleased to know that the game now features a Platinum trophy.
Star Wars Episode I: Racer Definitive Edition will be released on PlayStation 4 on May 12. The Nintendo Switch version will probably be available around the same time, although no details about the price have been revealed yet.
