Gamers also get more transportation and building options

Video game developer Colossal Order and publisher Paradox Interactive are announcing that they are planning on creating and launching a new expansion called Snowfall for their Cities: Skylines builder before the end of the year, adding both new mechanics and more transport options for fans of the genre.

The main elements, as the name implies, is a weather system that will force players to deal with falls in temperature by ensuring that their cities get all the heat residents need and that they have the tools to keep the roads clear when heavy snow hits.

All players of Cities: Skylines will get cosmetic changes including rain and fog, altering the look of the season, but only those who get Snowfall will be able to actually get the gameplay tweaks associated with weather.

The development team states, "New snowplow services will be required to prevent traffic from freezing in place while new all-weather trams and expanded public transit options can help residents and visitors alike get around town – and visit the new winter parks and landmarks available in Snowfall."

The complexity of the transportation system in Cities: Skylines will be enhanced, and while line management will be easier, there are more options than ever to deal with.

Heating for the cold season will lead to an increase in electricity demands, and gamers will also have the options to employ water-based heat systems to create a better balance for their city.

Despite the fact that many Cities: Skylines do not appreciate the chirp system that delivers updates on city state, more statuses are being integrated into the coming Snowfall expansion.

Screens for the new content suggest that virtual citizens will also be willing to install big Christmas trees in their neighborhoods and that the Northern Lights will also be present to enchant long winter nights.

Cities: Skylines offers a classic take on the city building genre

The first After Dark expansion for the title allowed gamers to improve their creations with new tourism options as well as entertainment for those citizens who are ready to head into town after a day of work.

Since Cities: Skylines arrived, the team at Colossal Order has also delivered a range of free updates for it that enhanced the core mechanics and eliminated problems flagged by the player community.

It will be interesting to see whether the new mechanics of Snowfall will be able to prove as interesting to the player base as the mods that the fans have been creating to expand the scope of the city builder.

The Colossal Order game has become a hit with players because of its solid core mechanics and the fact that no cumbersome online-only features, like those of the most recent Sim City, were made mandatory.

The initial experience was a little too focused on transportation, and one of the priorities of the expansion is to introduce new options for gamers while also increasing the challenge level with entirely new systems.

Cities: Skylines - Snowfall is only confirmed for the PC at the moment, and the associated price has not yet been revealed.
