Already available in Canary and Dev channels

Well, this took a while. Microsoft has announced that the Chromium-powered version of Microsoft Edge would finally be able to open favorites in new tabs.

In case you believe you’ve seen this feature somewhere else, it’s because you had, as the same capabilities have been part of the feature lineup of the legacy version of Microsoft Edge.

That’s right, the original version of Microsoft Edge was indeed able to open favorites in tabs, so seeing this feature missing from the Chromium-based version was quite a surprise.

However, Microsoft is now working on addressing this with the release of the feature in the Dev and Canary channels.

In other words, if you’re running the preview builds of Microsoft Edge, you should now be able to open favorites in new tabs. Nevertheless, worth knowing is that this new feature isn’t yet available for everyone, as Microsoft is using a controlled feature rollout approach to make sure everything is working properly.

This means that only a small set of users are getting the feature for testing purposes, with the availability to be expanded to more users if no signs of bugs are discovered.

“We’re excited to share that Add option to always open favorites in new tab is Addressed as of today in both our Canary and Dev channels! We’re still rolling this out, so if you don’t see it keep an eye out for it. The team is still working on finalizing search in Collections and double-clicking to close tabs. Some of you may already see these features, however we’re not quite ready to close these out on this list. We hope to have more updates on these two soon!” Microsoft announced earlier this month.

Microsoft has already teased major updates for the beta and the stable channels in January, so we’re only a few weeks away from the moment these goodies would go live for everyone.
