Chuwi is one of the less famous Chinese companies that are trying to fight with the big guys in the 2-in-1 device market, and after launching several devices to compete with Microsoft’s Surface, the firm is now trying to go a step further with a model called SurfBook.

Even though its name might suggest this new device is supposed to be a rival to Microsoft’s Surface Book, it’s more of a Surface Pro alternative, as it comes with specs and dimensions that are very close to Microsoft’s 2-in-1 device, with a few exceptions in the case of the CPU.

Published on IndieGogo where it has already reached its $30,000 goal, the SurfBook will feature a 12.3-inch display with 2736x1824 pixel resolution. The device will also come with a pen with 1024 pressure levels, while Microsoft’s recently-launched upgraded generation features 4096.

Same screen and even better processor?

A comparison published on the fundraising campaign shows that the displays of the Chuwi SurfBook and the Surface Pro 4 are nearly the same, with the same dimensions and resolution, aspect ratio, and 10 point multi-touch.

In terms of processor, Chuwi says it’s even better because it offers a 4-core chip running at a maximum speed of 2.2 GHz, while the Surface Pro comes with a 2-core processor at the same speed.

The difference is that Microsoft’s Surface actually offers better performance because it’s powered by Intel’s Core i line of processors, while the Chuwi runs on an Intel Apollo Lake N3450.

The device will also boast 6GB RAM and a maximum of 128GB storage, while the battery will be a 10,000 mAh unit that should provide at least 8 hours of autonomy per charge.

Since the device has already reached its target on IndieGogo, it shouldn’t take too long before it enters mass production, with Chuwi aiming to release it at the end of June.
