14 DAY TRIAL // Chandra Bahadur Dangi, the shortest man in the world, passed away earlier this week at the Lyndon B. Johnson Tropical Medical Center in Pago Pago, American Samoa.
It is understood that he died due to medical complications he developed after falling ill with pneumonia. He was 75 years old.
Chandra Dangi was born and raised in Nepal
75-year-old Chandra Bahadur Dangi was born and raised in a village some 400 kilometers (250 miles) from Kathmandu, Nepal's capital.
Standing just 21.5 inches (54.6 centimeters) tall, he was declared the shortest man in history in 2012, when officials with Guinness World Records learned about his story and paid him a visit.
Having measured him, the Guinness World Records delegation found him to be 2 inches (about 5 centimeters) shorter than Junrey Balawing of the Philippines, the previous record holder.
Once declared the shortest man in the world, Chandra Dangi found himself touring the globe, with thousands of people flocking to see him.
In 2013, he had the chance to meet Sultan Kosen, the tallest man in the world at 99 inches (251 centimeters), and posed for a photograph with him.
Chandra Dangi's death was announced by a spokesperson for the Lyndon B. Johnson Tropical Medical Center this past Friday and Guinness World Records was quick to offer condolences to his family.
“Guinness World Records would like to express its sincere and heartfelt condolences to Mr Dangi’s family in this difficult time. He will be remembered forever as an iconic and extraordinary record holder,” the organization wrote in a message.
Junrey Balawing is once again the world's shortest man
Now that Chandra Bahadur Dangi is dead, 22-year-old Junrey Balawing of the Philippines is back to being the shortest man in the world.
All the same, it's still the 75-year-old from Nepal who holds the record for the absolute shortest man in history, Guinness World Records explains.
