Today, November 3, 2016, Canonical informed us about the general availability of the final release of the company's Ubuntu Snappy Core 16 Linux-based operating system designed for Internet of Things (IoT).

If you're reading this space, then you probably know that we've covered the entire development cycle of the Ubuntu Snappy Core 16, which has been in development since early September 2016, during which it received three Beta builds and two Release Candidate milestones that brought all the core features from Canonical's latest Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) operating system, along with the newest Snappy technologies for offering the best security for IoT (Internet of Things) devices.

"As companies continue to embrace Internet of Things solutions, security and quick, easy system updates are critical," said Jason Shepherd, Director of Strategy and Partnerships, IoT, Dell. "Dell has been working with Canonical on Ubuntu Core for over a year, and our Dell Edge Gateways are fully certified for Ubuntu Core 16. This enables Dell to offer the long term support and security that IoT use cases such as factory and building automation demand."

Ubuntu Core 16 provides users with regular and reliable security updates

The Ubuntu Snappy Core 16 operating system is, in fact, a slimmed-down version of the Ubuntu OS, engineered to be deployed on a wide range of embedded and IoT devices, including Raspberry Pi 2 and Raspberry Pi 3 single-board computers, as well as DragonBoard 410c development boards. It's designed from the ground up to provide users with regular and reliable security updates, and app stores for intelligent connected devices.

Ubuntu Snappy Core is known to be already deployed in various popular switches, digital signage solutions, industrial and home gateways, drones, radio access networks, and robots. The new version delivers groundbreaking security and management and aims to become a developer-friendly platform for those who want to build and deliver their own Snaps. Ubuntu Snappy Core 16 is available for download for free right now, and it also works on 64- and 32-bit PCs.
