Not many people remember the old Star Wars: Battlefront III

Star Wars: Battlefront III was a game developed by a studio named Free Radical Design and it was said to be almost complete back in 2008. Unlike the current iteration of Star Wars Battlefront, made by DICE, the old game seemed to have much more variety and seamless action that would take players from the surface combat to space stations and ships in orbit.

Given that all of this stuff was done and was possible back in 2008, it seems weird that Electronic Arts and DICE didn't aim to incorporate it. On the other hand, it would also mean that they are just taking it slow, and they will take this opportunity to add different content to the upcoming titles in the franchise. In any case, the developers from Free Radical Design didn't hold anything back, and they've integrated pretty much anything they wanted.

Star Wars: Battlefront III never left the Alpha stage and it was canceled by LucasArts, the owners of the rights back then. The Free Radical Design studio eventually got bought by Crytek, and it ended up working on Homefront: The Revolution. Then, Crytek got into financial troubles and sold the rights to Homefront to Deep Silver. In any case, it's safe to say that the people who originally worked on the old Star Wars: Battlefront III have been scattered.

Star Wars: Battlefront III was truly awesome

There are two things that you will notice in the video below. One is that you could take a ship from the surface and go to space, where you would continue to fight. The maps were huge, and they were probably really advanced for their time. Secondly, you could play with a wide array of characters from the movies, like Han Solo, Princess Leia, quite a few Jedi, Lord Vader, Ewoks, and even the infamous Jar Jar Binks.

It's hard not to notice some similarities to the current iteration of Start Wars. Facing Vader in battle seemed just as difficult, for example. On the other hand, it also had a single-player campaign, a story line, and much more content overall.
