The game will also feature new types of weapons

The fact that both developer Infinity Ward and publisher Activision are unwilling to offer a first look at the Call of Duty title that’s set to arrive this year means that there’s plenty of space to speculate about what the new game might deliver in terms of both gameplay and story.

A new rumor, first mentioned by an insider on Twitter and then confirmed by Eurogamer with other sources, claims that the new shooter will explore the far future of humanity and will feature space-based battles between groups armed with powerful futuristic weapons.

It seems that the story will not have any kind of connection with either Advanced Warfare or Black Ops 3, both of which made a small jump into the future and used genetic enhancements and robotic helpers to justify improved performance for soldiers on the battlefield.

Infinity Ward also created the two Modern Warfare entries in the Call of Duty franchise and Ghosts, but neither of them is linked to the experience that they are preparing for this year.

According to Activision, the plan is to offer a first look at the first-person shooter during the coming E3 2016 event in June, with more details arriving over the summer season.

Activision is not commenting on rumor and speculation about its future video game projects.

Call of Duty might also come packed with older titles in 2016

Another rumor suggests that those who are planning to get the coming shooter on the Xbox One will be able to also pick up copies of both Modern Warfare titles via the backwards compatibility feature of the home console.

The move is designed to increase the number of players who favor the Microsoft platform, especially given that for a few years downloadable content for Call of Duty will be offered on the PS4 with a 40-day exclusivity window.

Infinity Ward has said that it has some great and innovative ideas for its coming video game and that it wants to make sure that the single-player and multiplayer modes receive the same amount of attention.

Call of Duty will deliver its 2016 installment before the end of November on the PC, the Xbox One from Microsoft and the PlayStation 4 from Sony and will probably compete directly with a new Battlefield video game from DICE and Electronic Arts, which has not been officially revealed either.

Until it arrives, Activision has to deliver three more DLC packs for the currently available Black Ops 3.
