Video game developer Treyarch and publisher Activision are announcing that the zombie powered mode for the coming Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 first-person shooter will be called Shadows of Evil and is a departure from the classical elements that have defined the series.
The new experience is designed to take gamers to the 1940's, into a city which seems designed to include every noir cliche in the book and will feature four very different characters who will need to combine their power in order to stop the undead attacks.
The group is brought together by the Shadow Man, a mastermind with some unclear reasons, and it seems that Treyarch is planning to add more narrative elements to the zombie campaign than ever before.
Shadows of Evil for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 will include voice work and the likeness of well-known actors Heather Graham, Neal McDonough, Ron Perlman, and Robert Picardo.
The core mechanics will remain largely unchanged as gamers will have to work together in order to kill the undead, including some pretty impressive monsters, but it seems that each character will have some unique special powers, including some which are downright monstrous.
Treyarch is also saying that Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 will include a remade version of Der Riese, one of the most loved multiplayer maps based around zombies, which will be offered after launch as downloadable content.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 3's story is set in 2065
The most surprising thing about the zombie based cooperative campaign is that it takes gamers to the past, given that the rest of the title is so focused on the future, and the way innovations like genetic manipulation and robotics will change the way war affects people.
There's a lot of contrast between shots that Treyarch and Activision have shown from the single player, which takes place in 2065, and the look of the zombie-based content that is centered on the 1940's.
The coming shooter will also introduce a more dynamic multiplayer, with a range of new modes and characters for gamers to quickly choose and jump right into the action.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 will be out on the PC, the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 on November 6 and older home consoles will also get versions although their quality will be inferior.
