14 DAY TRIAL // Last week we told you everything there was to know about the major Calamares 2.2 release, an open-source project whose main design goal is to become the best distribution-independent installer out there.
Calamares 2.2 introduces several new features, among which we can mention support for NVMe SSDs, support for 32-bit UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) GRUB bootloaders, support for "replacing" free disk space, improvements to the debug interface, bug fixes to the partitioning module, and an automated crash reporting infrastructure based on GDB (GNU Debugger) and Breakpad.
And today it looks like Calamares 2.2 sees its first point release, version 2.2.1, which attempts to fix some of the issues discovered since Calamares 2.2, such as a build problem that broke the YAML-cpp detection, better support for the Qt 5.6 GUI toolkit or later versions by implementing the QtWebEngine module instead of QtWebKit in webview.
"The Calamares team is happy to announce the immediate availability of Calamares 2.2.1, a maintenance release that fixes several issues which were discovered since Calamares 2.2," reads the announcement. Translators are now credited in the About dialog
It might be a small thing, but the Calamares developers now give credits to all translators who helped translate the distribution-independent installer in various languages in the About dialog, which will mean a lot to them. Moreover, the libcrashreporter-qt submodule has been updated to its latest version and the locale.gen parser can now correctly exclude comments from the locales list.
Once again, GNU/Linux maintainers who are looking to implement the Calamares graphical installer in their distributions should be aware of the fact that starting with version 2.2, they will need to initialize the libcrashreporter-qt submodule when building from git master. Also, for NVMe device support, the KPMcore 2.1.1 component is required for the partitioning module. You can download the Calamares 2.2.1 sources right now.
