Starting September 28 and until Halloween, Burger King has a special treat in store for fast food lovers with a soft spot for the downright bizarre: a special burger made with pitch-black buns.

The odd-looking treat is Burger King's way to celebrate Halloween, which explains why it's called the Halloween Whopper. Sure, this yearly celebration is still weeks away, but it's never too soon to start cashing in on it, Burger King seems to think.

The fast food chain promises the burger tastes divine

Without further ado, here's what's in Burger King's newly unveiled Halloween Whopper: flame-grilled beef, melted cheese, fresh tomatoes and lettuce, mayonnaise, steak sauce, pickles and onion slices. As for the black buns, Burger King describes them as having a perfectly delightful black pepper flavor.

The fast food chain is the first to admit the Halloween Whopper looks kind of weird. All the same, it promises that, odd color aside, it tastes positively divine.

“BURGER KING® restaurants are launching the A.1. Halloween WHOPPER® sandwich this season, a burger unlike any other in America, with a black bun that has A.1. flavor baked in,” it writes in a press release.

“While the pitch-black bun gives the Halloween WHOPPER® sandwich a look that may make some think 'hmmmmm?' the burger’s classic A.1. flavors will have tasters saying 'mmmmm,'” it adds.

To make sure nobody feels left out, Burger King has made the Halloween Whopper available at restaurants nationwide. The suggested price is $4.99 (€4.44).

This isn't the fast food chain's first black burger

Back in last year's September, black burgers were introduced at Burger King restaurants in Japan. These ones were even blacker than the Halloween Whopper. They didn't have just black buns but also black cheese and black ketchup, which owed their color to squid ink and bamboo charcoal.

The fast food chain restaurant says that, having introduced these black burgers in Japan, folks in the US were quite upset about not being able to give them a try themselves. So, this year, the Halloween Whopper was rolled out in an attempt to make amends.

“Our US guests have been extremely curious about the bun flavors they’ve seen introduced in Japan and other countries, so we saw the opportunity to bring them an equally unique experience,” said Eric Hirschhorn, Chief Marketing Officer for the BURGER KING® Brand North America.
