Google Chrome continues to be the world’s number one desktop browser despite a small decline last month, while Microsoft’s Edge, which is the new Windows 10 default, struggles to improve the market share even if a new Windows 10 version was just around the corner.

In terms of market share numbers, Google Chrome is the leading choice with 61.69%, while Internet Explorer, the more or less discontinued Microsoft browser, is second with 12.30%. Firefox is third with 10.17%.

Microsoft Edge dropped to 4.45% last month despite the imminent release of the April 2018 Update, a new OS feature update that brought several improvements, including for the browser itself.

Microsoft’s Edge push

The worse news for Microsoft is that Edge fails to increase its market share despite all the new features that it received and the rather aggressive push that the company embraced in order to convince users to avoid third-party replacements.

Microsoft has often been criticized for becoming too aggressive with its push for Edge browser, and the company sometimes turned to ads right on the desktop to highlight the main features of its new app.

All these efforts, however, fail to pay off, and Google Chrome continues to be the preferred choice for more than 6 in 10 desktop users.

Edge has barely improved in the last 12 months, growing less than 1 percent since 2017. For example, Microsoft’s new browser was running on 3.97 percent of the desktop computers back in May 2017, while last month, it hardly reached 4.45%.

Without a doubt, this can only be bad news for Microsoft, especially as the company is bringing Edge to all platforms, including Android and iOS. With this browser, the software giant aims to offer better sync features across devices, thus trying to address the lack of a mobile platform of its own following the death of Windows 10 Mobile.
